Getting started
- Install MapRows for free from its Google Workspace Marketplace page: click Install and choose your Google account.
- Open any spreadsheet and choose Extensions → MapRows → Open MapRows.
- The first time, Google asks you to allow MapRows' permissions (see Permissions).
- The sidebar opens with five tabs: Geocode, Reverse, Distance, Map and Account. The bar at the top shows today's usage and when it resets.
Your sheet needs a header row, usually row 1. MapRows reads the headers to suggest the right columns.
Geocode addresses
- On the Geocode tab, choose the sheet and header row.
- Tick the address column or columns: one full-address column, or several parts in order (Street, City, State, ZIP). Columns with address-like headers are pre-selected.
- Optional: Limit to a country for better matches.
- Choose your output. Coordinates gives latitude and longitude. Standard adds formatted address, city, state, postcode and country. Everything adds house number, street, county, state and country codes, confidence and match type. You can also tick fields one by one.
- Choose All rows or Selected rows, then press Geocode.
Results appear in new columns to the right of your data. Each new header carries a small note starting with MapRows:. Keep it, and later runs reuse those columns instead of adding new ones. MapRows never edits your own columns or formulas.
Statuses
| Status | Meaning | What to do |
|---|---|---|
OK | Matched with good confidence | Nothing |
LOW_CONFIDENCE | Matched, but with confidence below 0.6, often only the street or town | Check the formatted address. Add city or ZIP, or set a country filter |
NO_MATCH | Nothing found | Fix typos or add more address parts |
EMPTY_INPUT | The input cells were blank | Nothing |
INVALID_INPUT | Coordinates couldn't be read (latitude must be −90 to 90, longitude −180 to 180) | Use 34.05, -118.25 or two numeric columns |
ERROR: … | A temporary problem, for example a rate limit | Run again. Only unfinished rows are retried |
Skip rows already done is on by default. It skips rows whose status is OK or LOW_CONFIDENCE, so re-runs cost nothing for finished rows.
Reverse geocode
On the Reverse tab, pick the Latitude and Longitude columns, or one combined column like 34.05, -118.25. Choose the fields you want and press Reverse geocode. The new headers end in “(reverse)”, so they never clash with forward-geocoding columns.
Distance & travel time
On the Distance tab, pick the Origin and Destination columns. Each cell can be an address or a lat, lng pair.
- Straight line (Free): great-circle distance. It uses no lookups when both sides are coordinates.
- Driving, Walking, Cycling (Pro): road distance, plus travel time in minutes and as text (for example “1 h 05 min”).
Choose miles or kilometres. Addresses are geocoded first (1 lookup each), and a route costs 1 more lookup.
Insert a map
On the Map tab, choose your coordinate columns and press Insert map. The image goes on a sheet named “MapRows map”, which is replaced each time you insert a new map, and it carries the required attribution. Free maps show up to 25 points and Pro maps up to 200. A map costs 1 lookup.
Free formula
=MAPROWS_DISTANCE(lat1, lng1, lat2, lng2, [unit]). The unit is "mi" (default) or "km". It also works on whole ranges:
=MAPROWS_DISTANCE(B2:B100, C2:C100, D2:D100, E2:E100, "km")
It calculates the straight-line distance inside the cell and uses no lookups.
Limits & resuming
- Free: 100 lookups per day. Pro: 2,500 per day (fair use). Allowances reset at 00:00 UTC, and the sidebar shows that time in your time zone.
- Large sheets run in short chunks with a progress card. You can Pause anytime.
- When the allowance, or MapRows' shared daily capacity, runs out, the task pauses. Press Resume after the reset and it carries on from the next unfinished row.
- If you close the sidebar mid-task, your progress is kept. Reopen it and press Resume.
- You can have one unfinished task per spreadsheet. Starting a new one asks before replacing it.
Pro & your account
- Buy Pro: Account tab → Get Pro, or the pricing page. Checkout is handled by Stripe. Right after payment, your license key is shown on the confirmation page. Copy it from there and keep it somewhere safe. Lost it? Email support@cellbrook.com from the address you used at checkout.
- Activate: paste the key into Account → Activate Pro. A key works on a limited number of Google accounts. Remove it from one account to move it to another.
- Manage, cancel or download invoices: Account → “Manage or cancel subscription”, which opens the Stripe customer portal (sign in with your checkout email). See also subscription terms and refunds.
- Your own Geoapify key (Pro): Account → paste your key. MapRows limits then stop applying, and your Geoapify plan's limits apply instead.
Permissions
MapRows asks Google for three permissions, the minimum it needs:
| Permission | Why |
|---|---|
| Access only the spreadsheets you use MapRows with | Read the columns you choose and write results in the open spreadsheet. No other files. |
| Show content in sidebars and dialogs | Display the MapRows sidebar and help. |
| Connect to an external service | Send the selected addresses or coordinates to Geoapify, and your license key to our license server at cellbrook.com to check your subscription. Nothing else is contacted. |
MapRows does not ask for your email address, contacts, Drive or Gmail. You can revoke access anytime at myaccount.google.com/permissions.
Accuracy & data
Results come from Geoapify using OpenStreetMap data (© OpenStreetMap contributors, ODbL). They can be wrong or incomplete, especially for new buildings and rural addresses, so check the ones that matter. The results you store in your sheet are yours to keep. If you publish them, keep the attribution “© OpenStreetMap contributors”.
